The presentation analyzes the price trends on world agricultural markets as well as forces shaping long-run price trends. In particular, it was shown that technical change and acreage influences food prices from supply side while changes in population, incomes (preferences and diet composition) and shift to renewable energy (biofuel) act from demand side. For Belarus it might result in increased costs of net food imports. Therefore it will be crucial to review the agricultural policy, reduce the level of support to agriculture, make investments in production and quality certification systems and support agricultural research and education. The presentation also points out the growing importance of reliable trade partnerships (WTO, European Neighbourhood Policy - FTA with EU) for Belarus.
